A remedy in a bottle
In December 1904, a Russian scientist stood up to give his Nobel Prize lecture on digestion. The gastric juice his lab drew from dogs, he said, the digestive fluid the stomach makes, "not only serves the purpose of research, but also as a good remedy."[1]
More than a century ago, Ivan Pavlov's lab collected gastric juice from dogs and sold it as a remedy for indigestion. More than 80 years later, a team in Zagreb went back to gastric juice with a different question: was there something in it that protects the body? That search is where BPC-157 begins.[2]
This is historical context, not a direct discovery chain leading to BPC-157.
